The SCMWA was a CIO union made up of state and municipal government employees, providing a CIO equivalent to AFSCME. Founded in 1937 in New York City it grew quickly and many locals had ties to the Communist Party. In 1946 SCMWA merged with the United Federal Workers of America (UFWA) to become the United Public Workers of America.
